For some it's about the money, the power, or the ego-boost. Not for me. I’m doing this because I want to give the power back to the residents. It’s time to take our city back!
For the past decade, we’ve watched as Miami has boomed with all manner of speculative development – and then busted when it all came crashing down.
Meanwhile, our public officials allowed huge condos and McMansions to be built in single family neighborhoods. Residents trying to hold onto their homes while property taxes and insurance ballooned faced code enforcement harassment from a city that should have been working to protect them.
The city didn’t do much for the lifeblood of our economy – small businesses – and it failed to attract the kind of new jobs that would allow real people to buy or rent all these new condos.
And even though we voted a referendum so the city would fix up our downtown, restore the Orange Bowl, and repair our neighborhood streets – Guess what?
Downtown Miami is still a mess. The Orange Bowl was demolished. And have you seen the condition of some our streets lately? Not only that, the historic character of Calle Ocho has been marred by ugly, big-box development and empty lots, and the unique working waterfront along the Miami River is still under attack from speculators.
It all happened because a majority of our commission turned a deaf ear to us, while they opened their arms – and our wallets! – to the special interests.
As a homeowner who has gone before the commission several times trying to protect our neighborhoods, and as a civic activist who has gone to show support for others, I am tired of being ignored. As a member of the Planning Advisory Board ("PAB"), I have heard and voted for the neighbors who have come before the Board opposing huge buildings next to their single family homes.
Well now, I am finally fed up enough to do something about it. I quit my very comfortable job as an executive legal assistant for a downtown law firm. I threw my name into the ring for commissioner of District 3.
There are several people running for this open seat. But I can guarantee none of them brings my passion for change, my track record of civic and government involvement, or my history in this district. I have lived here for more than 40 years.
No other candidate running for Commissioner of District 3 has my experience in dealing with neighbors’ concerns for their neighborhoods. I have fought those same concerns myself for years and years.
No other candidate has my experience in dealing with land uses. I have.
No other candidate has heard and voted with respect to the required Comprehensive Land Uses required by Tallahassee of the City of Miami. I have.
No other candidate running for Commissioner of District 3 has experienced how the City Commission systematically reverses the PAB’s ruling in favor of the residents simply to help interest groups. I voted consistently to protect the residents of Miami.
As your Commissioner, you will have a voice, you will be heard.
Public service isn't just a day job. It's a night job and a weekend job; a way of life. That is why I give you my promise that as an elected official I will only have one job, and that is to serve the residents of the City of Miami.
But this is not an easy undertaking. I need your help.
Let’s stop this cycle of seeking office for money or power – it’s time we serve the residents. With your support, we will Take Our City Back!
Thank you so much.
